a gallagher tale ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Tendency to be Ridiculously Considerate I left earlier than Shane from the land tonight, and it was pitch black outside. Zane fell asleep in the carseat almost immediately upon pulling out of the driveway and I could hear Tucker panting right behind me in the back seat. Those twisty winding back roads are hard to navigate in the daytime and with no street lights to help out, I was driving pretty slow. A few turns short of town a truck pulled up behind me and blinded me with his tall bright headlights. Ducking and squinting and swearing I started looking for somewhere to turn off the road so he could get past me. Suddenly the headlights vanished from my rearview mirror. I glanced up. The truck was still behind me but he had switched off his headlights and turned on his dimmer fog lights. I smiled. It must be Shane. Who else would be so ridiculously considerate as to turn off his headlights to avoid blinding the poor little gal in the red Kia in front of them? I came up to where the road ends in a T and I stopped to look for oncoming traffic, which is plain silly in the sticks. Shane pulled up alongside me and I rolled my window down, grinning at him. "You drive slow as shit!" he yells at me through his open window before peeling off around me and disappearing around a bend. Go figure. But I think shane & I have it figured out. What you need to do, you need to go through life until you find the craziest person who have ever imagined meeting. Super crazy! And then you marry them. Really, it works! The thing is, you spend so much of your time so confused by them that you don't really have the chance to fight. Honestly, you wouldn't believe how often something Shane says/does just leaves me standing there completely bemused. Not in like.. a mean way or a scary way. But just... "That doesn't make sense at all!" until you figure it out and then it makes perfect sense and it's actually pretty funny. He's a crazy guy. I really think the thing with Shane is that he is just unlike anyone else I have ever met. Completely unlike. He wasn't some rich kid with highlights in his hair and a tanning bed tan (sorry CT). He wasn't some geek or nerd trying to be funny on Match.com to make up for everything else he lacked. He wasn't even like the many military men I knew, many of whom I was instinctively attracted to. Nope, he was another animal completely. Just the kind of animal this animal-lover needed. :o) So here are some much needed updates: 1) On Friday night Amauvia got sick. I was up on the jet ski on the Tennessee River when I got the call. I had to leave Zane with Shane and drive all the way down to Kathy's. We had to call the vet. She came out in the dark, shone her headlights on Amauvia. She gave her a few shots. She stuck her hand up Amauvia's butt. She put a long tube up Amauvia's nose. And then she left us. I stood there with Amauvia's sleepy-induced head lolling on my arms, tubes hanging out of her nose and it was purely awful. Kathy let us borrow her horse trailer to take Amauvia to the vet's. She stayed there until the next day, Saturday. Saturday afternoon we brought her back to Kathy's. Sunday we put her back in the pasture. She is ok. She had an ulcer-flare up that the vet mistakenly diagnosed as colic. Actually, though, Amauvia has given me quite a scare and I think I'll keep a close eye on her for a little while. She has a little limp still and although I hope she just bruised her leg on the trailer ride, you just never know with horses. I was out there today and she seemed fine except she was so dang ornery. She's in season. Peaches was a doll though. I didn't have any tack with me, so I clambered up onto her back bareback without any reins. She is so bony I didn't feel ok riding her much. Her spine and withers just poke out so badly! She needs to put on weight. I really think she'll be alright, though. 11:12 p.m. - Wednesday, Oct. 03, 2007 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Today is Sunday November 18th - Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007 |
