My Two Blondes

I didn't get over to the horses until this morning, so I was a little off. But it was beautiful out this morning, so it ended up being timed perfectly right after all. The weather was pretty cool when I got there, around 11:00 am, but it warmed up quickly and I ended up a bit sweaty. That's ok, it's good for me. ;)

Amauvia & Peaches are just beautiful! And they get along great! I wanted to ride Peaches, but my bridle (which is Amauvia's) wouldn't fit her. So I will have to buy one that is draft-sized. Ah well. I did get to brush them and take tons of pictures. They will both stand in front of me and let me give them treats without getting snappy with me or each other, so that is just grand. Also, of course, they both follow me around like dogs. I had to crack Amauvia upside the butt to get her to run so I could get some pictures of her running, but unfortunately I could only get pictures of her butt. Ha! I will have to get someone else to smack her with the rope so I can be standing off to the side for a better angle next time.

Also, and I know how crazy this is, but I love the smell of horses. The smell of their bodies and their sweat. I love leaning against them and just smelling them. Really! They aren't like cows; they smell lovely. I also love the smell of my clothes after I've been with Amauvia (and now Peaches). That being said, I also love the smell of Shane when he's sweaty. Yesterday we went on a 4-wheeler ride after he had been working all afternoon and I got to sit behind him and rest my cheek on his back. :o)

Peaches has this way of cocking her head when he looks at you so she looks all curious and interested in what is going on. I think it's just so special. I never noticed it about her before today.

Here it is again, the curious look.

Amauvia's head looks like an Arabian when it's up against Peaches.

Everyone who meets Amauvia can't believe how unusual her eyes are. I think it's a combination of the color, the size, and the expression. But they aren't animal-like at all! They're just amazing.

I honestly think you can't really tell how beautiful a horse is until you fall in love with one. I can tell you, because I know it for a fact, Amauvia is beautiful. She really has this way of standing, of carrying herself, of looking at you, it's just beautiful.

Peaches.

Peaches is such a big strong horse!

To tell you the truth, when I first had Peaches brought over to join Amauvia, I thought it very likely that I would be re-selling her this spring. Her size intimidates me and I thought I would probably never feel comfortable being around her. But today, after catching her in the pasture and tying her up to brush her down and spray her with the fly spray, and then chasing her around taking pictures of her, I really don't feel that way any longer. I think she is a fine horse. She is very calm, and she probably won't be bad once she is used to being loved on. While I was brushing out her mane, she turned her head a bit to watch me work, and I swear she was trying to tell me how pleasant it was to have me there. I know it sounds crazy, but you didn't see that look. I really don't think she's ever really been a "pet" before. She was a Mennonite's working draft, and then she was briefly Aubree's trail horse, and now she's my pet. She may be eight years old, but I think she will learn to like it fast. And I think I like it already.

Our power will be in sometime in the next two weeks, and then we can park the Fifth Wheel up at our land and I can start building the fence. The pasture is halfway cleared and just mainly needs to be smoothed down now. And seeded. Maybe before winter is here we will have Peaches & Amauvia on our own land.
